John Barnes believes Gareth Southgate made the right decision by not calling up Chelsea winger Raheem Sterling to the latest England squad.
Sterling has not played for England since the 2022 World Cup, despite his impressive form for the club.
The 28-year-old has five goals and two assists in 14 games this season. In addition, he recently performed excellently, helping Chelsea draw at home with Manchester City 4-4.
However, it was not enough to keep Southgate in the squad for the Euro 2024 qualifiers against Malta and North Macedonia.
“Raheem has played well in the last few games for Chelsea. And Chelsea haven’t performed very well until recently,” Barnes told ยูฟ่าเบท
“People watched the last few matches and said he should have been called up to the national team. But if you look at the quality players Gareth Southgate has, it is a difficult situation.”
“I will always call Raheem into the England team. But I don’t think it will be a problem at all that Raheem is not in this team.”
“Raheem may guarantee a place in the team base on his recent form. But the team was chosen. Before the City game so he will be back in the team in the future.”
